Lucas Meyer Biography

About

Hey There! I’m Lucas Meyer Food Photographer | Visual Storyteller | Light Chaser | Age 28 San Diego, California-based creative who believes that we eat with our eyes first, and that a messy plate is a delicious plate.

My Story

I started my career as a portrait photographer, but I quickly realized that food is the most honest subject you can shoot. It doesn’t have bad angles; it just has delicious ones. I used to think food photography was about perfection—using tweezers to place every sesame seed. But over time, I realized that “perfect” food looks like plastic. It looks fake. I shifted my style to capture the movement of cooking: the steam rising from a bowl, the crumb falling from a cookie, the drip of sauce. I want my photos to make you feel like you’re sitting right there at the table.

The Turning Point

Early in my career, I worked for a commercial brand that made me use motor oil instead of syrup and glue instead of milk because “it looked better on camera.” I felt like a liar. I walked away from that job because I wanted to photograph food that could actually be eaten. I found Ricipes, where Grace (our CEO) promised me that we would never fake a shot. Everything you see on our site is real, edible, and delicious. That honesty reignited my passion for the lens.

What I Learned the Hard Way

I used to obsess over expensive gear. I thought if I bought a $5,000 lens, my photos would automatically be amazing. I was wrong. I learned that light is more important than the camera. You can take a stunning photo with an iPhone if you understand window light. I also learned that “styling” isn’t about making things pretty; it’s about making them look tasty. A perfectly clean napkin is boring; a napkin with a smudge of chocolate sauce tells a story of enjoyment.

My Approach Now

I shoot exclusively with natural light because it renders colors true to life. My goal is to capture the texture that Sofia (our Pastry Head) works so hard to create, or the vibrant colors that Hannah (Executive Chef) develops. I work fast because food waits for no one. I catch the steam while it’s hot and the ice cream before it melts. I don’t use hairspray or fake ice cubes. If a photo looks good, it’s because the recipe is good.

What I Believe

  • Mess is beautiful: A clean plate looks untouched; a messy plate looks loved.
  • Natural light is king: Flash makes food look like it’s in an interrogation room.
  • Don’t over-edit: A tomato should look like a tomato, not a neon sign.
  • Props tell a story: The fork, the wood grain, the cloth—they set the mood.
  • Honesty tastes better: What you see is exactly what you get.

How I Can Help You

At Ricipes, I’m the guy behind the camera ensuring you know exactly what your dish should look like. I create the visual guides that help you judge if your sauce is thick enough or your bread is browned enough. I also write our “Phone Photography” guides, teaching you how to take better photos of your own creations to share on Instagram, because everyone deserves to show off their hard work.

A Little More About Me

When I don’t have a camera in my hand, I’m usually surfing (I live in San Diego, after all) or hunting for vintage cameras at flea markets. I have a collection of 30+ old film cameras that I refuse to get rid of. My guilty pleasure? Eating cold food. After spending 30 minutes photographing a burger, I usually end up eating it stone cold. It’s an occupational hazard, but I don’t mind.
